How Successful Fix & Flippers Push Through When Everyone Else Quits
All fix & flippers get punched in the face.
- You’ll find mold in the property.
- Your contractor won’t show up.
- Your wholesale buyer will back out.
- The foundation has a crack in it.
It’s not a matter of IF, it’s a matter of WHEN these things happen…
And how you respond will determine your success in this industry. It’s these types of roadblocks that keep the barrier to entry high, and then filter out the vast majority who are brave enough to get started.
When I’m training new investors, there’s something I always ask:
What’s your “why?”
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
When the storms come and things aren’t going your way, the easy thing to do is to quit. Right now reading this post, it’s easy to say “sure, I’ll persevere. I can work through that.”
But in my experience, most people won’t do it. It’s the sad truth that nearly everyone takes the path of least resistance through life, and that’s laid bare in something with as many emotional roller coasters as flipping homes.
So what gets you moving?
Figuring out Your “Why”
If your “why” is “Ummm, to make more money,” that’s not enough. People don’t care about money, they care about the things that money can give them.
When figuring out your “why”, the secret is to go deep. Keep pushing yourself until you come up with an emotional response that hits home for you.
“I want to make more money.”
“To be more financially free.”
“So I don’t have to stress about money.”
“Because growing up, we didn’t have any money, and I saw my parents fight and struggle to put food on the table every day. I don’t want that to be the focus of my life, nor for my kids. If I can create a financial foundation for them growing up, then they have an advantage I never had.”
Now that’s a great “why!” Notice the secret is to keep asking yourself, probing deeper and deeper until you get to something that strikes at your soul – something that moves you, spiritually and physically.
It’s got to be something that spurs you into action, even when you’re tired, you have a headache, or you’ve come across yet another roadblock to making the deal happen.
I’ve worked with a lot of people without strong enough motivation. You can tell pretty quick. They’re the ones who put in little effort, get no results, and then place the blame everywhere but themselves. They slap a sticker on their car, wonder why no one calls their phone number, and then blame the strategy, or the person who taught them the strategy – not themselves for doing the bare minimum.
When I first started fix & flips, I used two phones to maximize how many dials I could make in a day! That’s the attitude that produces success – not trying out whatever’s easiest.
